SHAWMUIR LODGE

Shawmuir Lodge sits near the entrance to Pollok Country Park. Built as a gatelodge for Pollok House, it had fallen into disuse and disrepair by the 1990s. GBPT became involved in 2015 and saw an opportunity to restore this little gem as housing and a fitting entrance to the park.

  • Building End User: Veterans Housing Scotland (formerly Scottish Garden Veterans’ Housing Association)
  • Completion Date: 2017
  • Project Cost: £335,000

History

Shawmuir Lodge dates from 1891 and designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, and commissioned by Sir John Stirling-Maxwell. It was gifted along with the wider estate to the City of Glasgow by Sir John’s daughter, Anne Maxwell-MacDonald in the 1960’s. After deteriorating for many years, Strathclyde Building Preservation Trust (SBPT) carried out an options appraisal in 2011 and progressed a restoration project.

When SBPT closed in 2015, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust worked with Glasgow City Council and the National Trust for Scotland Little Houses Investment Scheme to identify a sustainable use for the building and we were introduced to The Scottish Garden Veterans’ Housing Association.
