KILBARCHAN STEEPLE BUILDINGS
While the Trust’s primary focus is Glasgow, we are also keen to pursue projects in the surrounding environs and authorities. In 2024, Glasgow Building Preservation Trust carried out a feasibility study on Kilbarchan Steeple, the Category A-listed landmark at the centre of Kilbarchan village. The study highlighted the need for repairs, maintenance, and accessibility upgrades to support continued community use. GBPT is collaborating with Renfrewshire Council to identify a sustainable future for the building.
History
Kilbarchan Steeple is a much-loved landmark for Habbies and has dominated the local skyline for over 250 years. Built in 1755 by local mason David Kerr, the six-storey, Category A-listed building stands at the centre of the village on Steeple Street. Originally rendered in lime, it reflects mid-18th-century vernacular architecture with subtle neo-Classical details.
The Project
In 2023, the Trust won a tender to lead on a feasibility study for Kilbarchan Steeple in Renfrewshire which was completed in 2024. Thanks to a new £350,000 restoration contract approved by Renfrewshire Council, the iconic Steeple is to receive essential repairs.
Works on the 18th century landmark began in July 2025, covering everything from roof repairs and leadwork to upgraded internal services, all designed to protect the building’s future. It’s the first step in transforming the steeple into a vibrant community space once more.
Developed in collaboration with GBPT and shaped by local feedback, the project envisions a bold new chapter for the steeple including café or restaurant on the ground floor, a flexible community hall for events and gatherings and a refurbished meeting space for the Kilbarchan General Society upstairs.
